E-mail: isdutra@fmva.unesp.br In extensive animal husbandry, natural or artificial ponds allow direct access of cattle to water but result in degradation of water quality and in increased health risks. Under such circumstances eutrophication occurs and consequently algal bloom, among them toxigenic cyanobacteria. The present study aimed to report the occurrence of cyanobacteria in the drinking water of cattle and to describe their physical and chemical parameters, as pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen. Nineteen samples of natural ponds or water troughs formed predominantly as result of rainfall from six farms located in the Southeast and Midwest regions of Brazil were analyzed for the presence of cyanobacteria, and pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen was measured. Microcystis and/or Merismopedia were detected in two ponds; one of them was covered with intense flowering. The values of pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen in 19 collections were pH 7.2-9.7, 31-34°C and 7.8-30mg/l respectively. Also non-pathogenic algae of several genera were detected besides the occurrence or not of cianogenics. Under these conditions, the common practices of drinking water supply for extensively raised cattle and the possibilities of eutrophication and cyanobacterial growth bring potential risks for animal health.

E-mail: isdutra@fmva.unesp.br Na pecuária extensiva, os bebedouros naturais ou artificiais possibilitam o acesso direto dos bovinos ao seu interior e trazem como consequência a degradação da qualidade da água e o aumento dos riscos sanitários. Em tais circunstâncias ocorre a eutrofização e consequentemente a floração de algas, dentre elas cianobactérias toxigênicas. O presente estudo teve por objetivo verificar a ocorrência de cianobactérias de interesse sanitário em água de dessedentação de bovinos e descrever os seus parâmetros físico-químicos pH, temperatura e oxigênio dissolvido. Foram examinadas 19 amostras de água de cacimbas ou bebedouros naturais formados predominantemente em decorrência da precipitação pluviométrica, coletadas em seis propriedades rurais localizadas nas regiões Sudeste e Centro-Oeste, para a presença de cianobactérias e mensurados os valores de pH, temperatura e oxigênio dissolvido. Microcystis e/ou Merismopedia foram detectadas em dois bebedouros; em um dos quais havia intensa floração. Os valores de pH, temperatura e oxigênio dissolvido nas 19 coleções oscilaram entre pH 7,2-9,7, 31-34°C e 7,8-30mg/l, respectivamente. Foram detectadas ainda algas consideradas não patogênicas de diversos gêneros, em conjunto ou não com a ocorrência das cianofíticas. Nessas condições, as práticas comuns de oferta de água de dessedentação na bovinocultura extensiva, as possibilidades de eutrofização e a contaminação por cianobactérias trazem potenciais riscos à saúde dos animais

The presence of spores was determined indirectly by cultivation in culture medium, followed by inoculation and neutralization in mice of samples of the sediment from the bottom of the raining ponds, from superficial soil and from cattle feces collected to its circuit. The toxin presence was evaluated directly by inoculation in mice of the filtered sediment of the ponds, followed by the neutralization in mice with antitoxins C and D. The presence of C. botulinum spores was significantly more frequent (p<0,05) in the cattle feces (31%), when compared with the results of the superficial soil samples (19%) and the sediments (10%). Botulinum toxins of type C and D or classified as belonging to the CD compound were detected in 6 samples (2%) of the 300 ponds. Of the 130 worked farms, in 122 (93,85%) ponds Clostridium botulinum spores or toxins were found in at least one of the researched variables, whilst ponds on only 8 (6,15%) farms did not present any contamination. Age and depth of the ponds were associated with the frequency of detection of botulinum spores and toxins. The older and shallower the ponds were, the larger was the frequency of isolation of the spores and toxins. The contamination of the ponds in the Araguaia valley with Clostridium botulinum spores and toxins type C and D demonstrates the permanent and growing potential risk for the occurrence of botulism in cattle through drinking water.

This paper reports the epidemiological, clinical, pathological and laboratorial aspects of 7 outbreaks of botulism in beef and dairy cattle fed with poultry litter, which occurred in the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, 1989-2000. Five outbreaks occurred in beef cattle herds, raised in confinement or under pasture conditions and supplemented with poultry litter, and 2 outbreaks occurred in dairy farms. From o total of 1,535 cattle supplemented regularily with poultry litter 455 animals (29.64%) died within 2 to 4 weeks. Morbidity and mortality varied from 3.47 to 100% in the 7 outbreaks. In one of the farms the lethality was 60.52%, and in others more than 88.43%, reaching 100% in three farms. Clinical signs were progressive paralysis, difficulties in moving, decubitus, normal alertness, decreased muscular tonus of tongue and tail, sialorrhoe and dyspnoe. At post-mortem examination of 30 cattle no noteable changes were observed. Spores of Clostridium botulinum were found in poultry litter samples collected on 7 farms. In liver, ruminal and intestinal fluid samples from 30 necropsied cattle botulinum toxin of type C (5) and D (9) or of the CD complex (1) were found in at least one of the samples collected from 15 animals, which confirms the clincial, pathological and epidemiological diagnosis of botulism.

#4 - Clostridium botulinum spores around decomposed cadavers of bovine victims of botulism in pastores of southern Goias, Brazil

Abstract in English:

Clostridium botulinum spore distribution around thirty decomposed bovine cadavers, presumed to be killed by Botulism, was evaluated in fifteen municipalities in southem Goias (Brazil). Six-hundred-and-thirty soil samples were collected on the site of cadaver decomposition and toward the four cardinal points. Botulin toxin detection from the filtrates of 630 soil cultures was obtained through inoculation of guinea pigs and revealed the presence of 221 cultures (35.07%). The identification of Clostridium botulinum types, using the serum neutralization technique in mice, allowed the recognition of toxins of 204 (32.38%) cultures belonging to five types, being 44 of type A (21.57%); 2 of type B (0.98%); 37 of type C (18.14%); 41 of type D (20.10%); 77 of the CD complex (37.74%) and 3 of type G (1.47%). Types E and F were not found. The toxins of 17 (2.69%) cultures could not be identified, conclusively. The distribution of the C, D and CD complex types around the cadavers was characterized by a negative linear regression influenced directly by the cadavers within a radius of 30 meters.

Foi avaliada a distribuição de esporos de Clostridium botulinum em torno de 30 cadáveres decompostos de bovinos, supostamente vítimas de botulismo, de 15 municípios no sul de Goías. A partir do local em que o cadáver se decompôs e na direção dos quatro pontos cardeais, coletaram-se 630 amostras de solo. A detecção de toxina botulínica dos filtrados das 630 culturas de solo foi obtida pela inoculação em cobaias e revelou a presença em 221 culturas (35,07%). A identificação dos tipos de Clostridium botulinum, utilizando-se a técnica de soro-neutralização em camundongos, permitiu reconhecer as toxinas de 204 (32,38%) culturas pertencentes a cinco tipos, sendo 44 do tipo A (21,57%); dois do tipo B (0,98%); 37 do tipo C (18,14%); 41 do tipo D (20,10%) 77 do complexo CD (37,74%) e três do tipo G (1,47%). Os tipos E e F não foram encontrados. As toxinas de 17 (2,69%) culturas não puderam ser identificadas conclusivamente. A distribuição dos tipos C, D e complexo CD em torno dos cadáveres caracterizou-se por uma regressão linear negativa influenciada diretamente pela presença do cadáver até um raio de 30 metros.
